Two weeks ago, the #9 LSU Tigers looked like the class of the SEC and a favorite to reach the College Football Playoff. Now, they're left dizzied and looking for answers after a pair of embarrassing defeats.
One week after falling flat in a 30-16 road loss to #2 Alabama, LSU was manhandled at home by an emerging Arkansas Razorbacks squad in a 31-14 loss. Things got so bad that the normally high-strung, high-energy crowd in Death Valley started quietly filing for the exits with about ten minutes left in the contest.
The night belonged to Arkansas RB Alex Collins who became the second straight SEC running back to best Heisman contender Leonard Fournette at his own game, outrushing Fournette 141 to 91 while rushing for two scores. Collins was so good on Saturday that QB Brandon Allen basically had the night to sit back, throwing just 16 passes for 141 yards, one touchdown and an interception the week after throwing 45 passes and six scores in a road upset of Ole Miss.
On the other side of the ball, Bret Bielema's defense held LSU to 330 yards of total offense, constantly harassing QB Brandon Harris with five sacks in the first three quarters after tallying just eight all season coming into the game. It was a far cry from the team's 53-52 win against Ole Miss last week, where the Rebels posted a mind-boggling 605 yards on the Razorbacks.
Play of the day goes to Jared Cornelius who took an end-around handoff on an option fake to the house for a 69-yard touchdown that effectively broke the spirits of the Tigers, extending the lead to 31-14 in the fourth quarter.
With its fourth straight win, Arkansas is now bowl eligible at 6-4 heading into next week's home date against Mississippi State. LSU falls to 7-2 with its second straight loss heading into a tough road game at Ole Miss.
