The Arizona Diamondbacks have been in discussions with the Reds about acquiring ace closer Aroldis Chapman, according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports.
Cincinnati has a “huge” asking price and the discussions could just be “due diligence,” per the report, but it’s notable that Arizona is looking into a deal. Yesterday, Arizona inquired about Cole Hamels of the Phillies, signaling that they're interested in making a big splash and bringing in a star player.
Considering Arizona’s interest in both Hamels and Chapman, it looks like the club wants to put some impact pieces in place to give them a chance to contend this year while also providing future value. Other clubs are weighing similar options, but the D’Backs do have the future salary capacity to make these moves work.
